Prosecution to examine 64 witnesses against Salman Khan

The decks were cleared on Tuesday for the commencement of fresh trial against Bollywood actor Salman Khan in the 2002 hit-and-run case with the prosecution giving to the court a list of 64 witnesses they propose to examine.

Salman is facing the charge of running over his Toyota Land Cruiser on a group of persons sleeping on a footpath outside a bakery in suburban Bandra in September 2002, killing one and injuring four others.

A list of 64 witnesses was submitted to Sessions Judge DW Deshpande, who deferred the matter to February 12 and asked the state to file additional documents if they wanted to furnish in the fresh trial against the actor.

Meanwhile, the prosecution informed the court that it had not yet got a nod from Law and Judiciary to its letter seeking permission to file an appeal in Bombay High Court against the sessions court judgement ordering a fresh trial in this case.

The court asked the prosecution to inform on the next occasion if it wanted to file an appeal.

The prosecution, in the letter to the government, said this was a fit case to file an appeal as the judge had erred in holding a de novo (fresh) trial. It said that there was no provision in law to hold a fresh trial and the evidence adduced in a court could not be discarded.

The prosecution argued that it would be difficult for them to trace all the witnesses and re-examine them. In the eyes of law, the evidence recorded earlier in this case by a Magistrate cannot be discarded and may be used in the trial.

On December 5, the court had ordered a fresh trial on the ground that the witnesses had not been examined in the context of aggravated charge of culpable homicide, which was invoked against the actor midway through the proceedings.

The charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder attracts a 10-year sentence. The actor had earlier been tried by a Magistrate for a lesser offence of causing death by negligence, which entailed an imprisonment of two years.

The case, dragging on for over a decade, had taken a twist earlier this year when the Magistrate, after examining 17 witnesses, held that the charge of culpable homicide was made out against Salman and referred the matter to a sessions court as cases under this offence are triable by a higher court.

Ajay's Action Jackson, Akshay's Holiday to release the same day?

It seems after Aamir Khan's film Peekay's release got postponed to December, the open spot - June 6 - already has takers.

According to reports, swooping right in to grab the now open date are Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar. It was earlier reported that Devgn's 'Action Jackson' and Akshay Kumar's 'Holiday' were originally slated for a May 1 release. But it seems now that they're both eyeing the same date, and may soon have to fight it out.

This is interesting, considering it was also reported that Ajay had requested the producers of Akshay's film to delay their film's release so avoid a clash. Ajay apparently had a sit down with his film's producers and they all agreed on June 6 for their film's release. Why the sudden change in plans we'll not know.

Whether it was unintentional or planned, we'd like to see who wins the Bollywood 'reel' off.

Arjun Kapoor, Alia Bhatt the new lovebirds of B-Town

Be it an established actor or new crop, every celeb loves to live up to the 'just friends' tag. Latest to be bitten by this philosophy bug are Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt

The actors, who will be seen together in 2 States, are reportedly spending quality time together. Also at a recent award ceremony, they came in together and according to an onlooker, they couldn't keep their eyes off each other.

Though Arjun went on record and cleared that he is happy being single and wants to focus on his career, reports of their brewing love story are still making rounds.

Earlier, Alia was linked to her previous co-actor Varun Dhawan. But the two have been friends and there is nothing more to their relationship.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to make a comeback with Mani Ratnam's film

Life has come a full circle for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. The actor who started her acting career with Mani Ratnam is all set to make a comeback on big screen with a film directed by him.

According to a report in a leading daily, Aishwarya Rai has given her nod to Mani Ratnam's film.

"Mani Ratnam shares a fabulous equation with Abhishek and Ash. But this time he's planning to direct a film which has a very strong female protagonist's character. Mani feels there is little room for Abhishek in his next," the daily quoted its source.

Apparently, Aishwarya always wanted to make a comeback with her favourite directors like Sanjay Leela Bhansali or Mani Ratnam. Her item song for Bhansali's Ram-Leela was almost finalized but reportedly Ash wanted some changes in the lyrics which Sanjay refused.

Well, we can't wait for Aishwarya to sizzle on sliver screen once again.

Alia Bhatt makes singing debut with Highway

With Oscar winner A. R. Rahman at the helm, Imtiaz Ali's upcoming film Highway is sure to offer audience a soulful ride. The music of the film was released recently at a Mumbai hotel by Rahman, Ali and the film's young leading lady Alia Bhatt, who also makes her singing debut with the kidnap drama.

The film's other protagonist, Randeep Hooda, didn't attend the event.

Rahman revealed it was Imtiaz's suggestion to make Alia sing.

" When Alia learned the song and sang to me, I was pretty impressed with her natural ability. We guided her to perfect her skills," Rahman said.

He also talked about how he wanted to sing the song in question, a ballad called Sooha Saha , solely because it is in Punjabi.

" I wanted to sing this song because I have never done a Punjabi song. I am a fan of the language, but when I learnt the context of the sequence where it was to be played, I realised that the song needed a female voice," Rahman said.

He added, however, that he got his wish anyway, by singing yet another Punjabi number from the film's soundtrack.

" I sang in Punjabi and to my surprise I picked up the language fast as I love it. My association with Subhash Ghai and Yash Chopra ji made it easy for me to learn Punjabi. It was easier than Hindi," he said.

Alia revealed that she went through a series of emotions, from nervousness to excitement, before her big playback debut.

" I was in Rahman sir's studio and was messing up. I hadn't rehearsed much, so we had to record it twice. He was very patient with me, for which I am really grateful to him. It really stopped me from going home and screaming in my pillow," she said.

Singing, she added, is more difficult than acting. " Acting is always easier than singing. I always knew that I would act, but never knew that I would be able to sing," the 20- year- old said.

Imtiaz is shooting a special video for Highway with Rahman and Alia Bhatt, which will be included in the film.

Talking about the video, Rahman said he found the experience " very exciting" as Imtiaz made " me do some crazy things".

Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif not on talking terms?

We had told you a few days back that all is not well between the most talked about couple of Bollywood Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif. The couple, who brought in the New Year together in New York, are believed to have had some differences on the trip.

If reports are to be believed, the actors are no longer on talking terms.

Both of them are shooting for Anurag Basu's 'Jagga Jasoos' and buzz is that they have kept to themselves during the shoot of the film recently.

"During the first schedule of the film, both Ranbir and Katrina were together all the time, but now some distance has crept into their relationship.

Infact, it was only after three to four days that Ranbir decided to catch up with Katrina in her vanity van. Besides, his was a brief visit, he only dropped in for half an hour," a tabloid quoted its source.
