If You’re Not Happy At Work, You’re Not Powerless
Not happy at work? Here’s some insight. When I was in college, I spent a year in England as part of my University’s study abroad program. What an amazing experience! And, while I brought back a lot of weird slang and an unusual faux accent (which, thankfully, disappeared quickly), the one British-ism I still refer to regularly is “Mind the Gap.”
You see, the London underground system (which they call the “tube”) has a looping announcement for passengers to “Please mind the gap,” referring to the space between the train and the platform. Apparently, tourists like me just love this. It’s so polite! Us Americans would say something like, “Don’t fall in, idiot.” Or, even more likely, we’d post a discreet sign saying, “Property owner not responsible for injury.”
So, “Mind the Gap” is a popular slogan for touristy T-shirts in London. It’s also one of those things that can make a gal nostalgic for a little British courtesy and a public transportation system that really works. But that’s neither here nor there.
I bring this up today because, in my work as a career coach, I find most of my clients come to me when there’s a gap of some sort. There’s a gaping hole between where they want to be and where they are. That gap is so big and so intimidating; they have no idea how to cross it. So, they simply stand there, on the train, letting it take them wherever it happens to be going. They never make the leap to the platform.
While working with one client in particular, something new dawned on me. As she sat there making excuses for all the ways in which her career was out of her control, complaining her motivation was low and her confidence shot, I suddenly heard that polite safety announcement in my head, “Please mind the gap.” And that’s when it hit me.
“Maybe your mind IS the gap!” I shouted.
She stopped speaking and looked at me like I was possibly having a stroke.
“You see,” I told her, “the gap between where you are and where you want to be isn’t that big. But your mind has turned it into something insurmountable. You’re letting your fears and anxiety run the show. We just have to get your mind back in check. It’s like that old trick, mind over matter. Except… it’s mind over job!!”
And thus a new idea was born.
Here’s the truth: Your mind is a powerful tool. But, if you don’t actively manage it, all kinds of junk can take over. Fear, anxiety, self-sabotage… these things live in everyone. When left unchecked, they can create a negativity spiral. That’s when that gap between where you are and where you want to be becomes a giant chasm, impossible to leap across.
If you’re not happy at work, you’re not powerless. Perhaps your mind has played tricks on you, messed with your confidence and forced you to believe you’re stuck. But, in reality, you have everything you need. You CAN take charge of your career by simply mastering your mind.

'The Big Bang Theory' finale: Raj finally talks to Penny while sober in 'The Bon Voyage Reaction'
While rumors of a cliffhanger in the Season 6 finale of "The Big Bang Theory" didn't quite pan out, the show did have a shocking ending just the same. In the episode, which aired Thursday (May 16), Rajesh Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar) finally did the unthinkable: He spoke to a woman sober.
It's been a long-running joke that Raj's timidness around women renders him speechless, relying on alcohol to give him the extra boost he needed to speak to the fairer sex. But, mourning the end of his nascent relationship with the even more anxious Lucy (guest star Lucy Miccuci), Raj turned to Penny (Kaley Cuoco) for a shoulder to cry, revealing he had no booze in his system, but speaking just the same.
It's a monumental moment for the character, even though he's suffering a romantic setback. This being "TBBT," it's also milked for laughs, as the girls come to realize that, underneath all his anxiety, lay an irrepressible chatterbox. Amy (Mayim Bialik) gets the biggest laugh when, as the episode ends, she asks, "Does he ever shut up?" Let's hope not.
Other Bits:
- Leonard (Johnny Galecki) winds up taking the gig with Stephen Hawking, taking him out of the country for four months. It's a relief that the allowed Penny to encourage her boyfriend, rather than attempt to hinder his achievement.
- It's also sweet how Penny steps up to take care of Sheldon (Jim Parsons) in Leonard's absence. It speaks to how the characters have become a real family in the six seasons the show's run. Can you imagine Season 1 Penny having anything to do with any of this?
What did you think of Raj's big moment, "Big Bang" fans?

TMZ tries cyberfear
Celebrity gossip site TMZ discovered the scary side of cyberspace a few weeks ago, running a frantic story about hackers blackmailing the United States into war.
As the headline shrieked,
HACKER GROUP THREATENS
TO BOMB WHITE HOUSE
(caps and font size in original)
The story starts from the classic trope of the scary hacker: clever, secretive, powerful. Hence their ability to attack the Obama administration.
TMZ then takes things in an odd direction by linking this political threat to celebrities.
We're told the group -- which claims responsibility for swatting Rihanna, Diddy, Ryan Seacrest, Justin Timberlake, Paris Hilton, Chris Brown, Tom Cruise and others -- contacted authorities through 911 and threatened to detonate 8 devices around the White House perimeter if President Obama does not declare war within 24 hours.
Yes, it's about "swatting", not geopolitics. And lets gossip-drenched readers connect their celeb-stalking tales to the White House. Interesting twist on cyberfear.
Naturally there's no retraction or sourcing of the claim.
Samsung sells 10 million Galaxy S4 by the end of May?
Korean resource ChosunIlbo citing an unnamed Samsung representative said that since the start of sales of the flagship smartphone Samsung Galaxy S4 he sold in excess of 4 million - from 26 April to the end of this month (that is, four days). Then sales have slowed down - and by May 10, it was sold as a whole, 6000000 Samsung Galaxy S4.

Also, the source said that by the end of the month, the company plans to sell 10 million Samsung Galaxy S4. In comparison, it took 85 days to have sold 3 million first-generation flagship Samsung Galaxy S1, 55 days - for the same amount of Samsung Galaxy S2, and 21 - Samsung Galaxy S3. Thus, Samsung Galaxy S4 became the fastest-selling flagship line of Samsung Galaxy S.

Finding Flowers
Realistically speaking (typing?), I should be working on my graduate project or possibly reviewing videos of me doing therapy with my clients. Instead, I’ve decided to talk to you about flowers!
I knew from the very beginning that flowers weren’t something I was super attached to as wedding decorations. When it comes to Sparky, his described interest is “As little as you care, I’m about 5% of that.” So it’s not something we’ve been too hung up on.

That being said, I knew that we would have some flowers. I couldn’t imagine walking down the aisle without a bouquet, and I think a tux without a boutonniere wouldn’t look quite right at a wedding.
Being a researcher by trade, I put a lot of time into reading reviews and looking at portfolios of various florists. Having done that, I decided on the florist I was most interested in and then promptly set it aside. (This was done last February, probably.) Fast forward past the year mark and my Knot checklist suggests “set up appointments with florists to discuss options.” Uh, yeah. I should do that.
Before I got in touch with the florist I had found, I asked BM Apple Pie who did the flowers at her wedding. Lo and behold, she used the same florist. Sold.
We went to the meeting with Wendy of Ravenna Bloom with iPhones in hand. Sparky didn’t have any strong opinions, so I used my inspiration board to talk about what I was thinking. Basically what I said: Anemones, pops of blue, edible components, texture, and a smallish bouquet (no hiding behind flowers for me!).
So…my inspiration? Click through!

I love that this bouquet has anemones. They are my favorite, and really the only flower that jumped out when I was looking at bridal bouquets. I love the different white/white colors and textures, too. Plus, the gray brunia berries are really rocking my world. If this is what my bouquet ends up looking like I would be very happy.

This one has those brunia berries again and the added texture/color of the gray dusty miller leaves. I also really like the pine cones, though I think those are more for a winter wedding than a summer/fall wedding like ours.

This bouquet has all kinds of things that I love—the anemones, the berries, and some hydrangeas. I don’t particularly like the green hydrangeas here, but the white ones are A-OK in my book. (Also, can we talk for a minute about that dress/necklace combination? So cute!)
I love the textural contrasts in this bouquet—white on white, gray dusty miller, gray brunia berries, and evergreen boughs! The evergreen makes me think immediately of winter, but Washington is known as the Evergreen State, so I could probably get away with it…
Speaking of texture…this bouquet has it. I love the edible component (the fiddlehead fern) and the pop of blue.

This bout has more edible components (rosemary) and simple pops of blue. Ideally if anemones are available, we’d have one of those, plus some blue, some brunia berries, and a touch of an edible component (an herb) in the boutonnieres, with those components also in the bouquets.
I was honestly surprised that I had such specific preferences for something I said I didn’t really care about. I’m going to attribute that to caring about the wedding in general. Have you found yourselves in a similar situation?
Reign Trailer Introduces Us To Mary, Queen Of Scots In The CW's New Drama
Among the new series joining The CW's Fall 2013 line-up is Reign, a period drama about Mary Stuart, the woman who would eventually go on to be known as Mary, Queen of Scots. The clip above gives us a look at the re-introduction of a young queen and her betrothed, Francis, a prince who may not be quite ready to settle down and get married. But the two seem to have some chemistry the moment they set eyes on one another. Others don't seem nearly as keen on this relationship, however.

Reign comes from Stephanie SenGupta, Laurie McCarthy, Frank Siracusa and Brad Silberling, and stars Adelaide Kane as Mary, with Toby Regbo playing Prince Francis. Here's the CW's full description for the series.
Hidden between the lines of the history books is the story of Mary Stuart, the young woman the world would come to know as Mary, Queen of Scots. Queen of Scotland since she was six days old, the teenage Mary is already a headstrong monarch - beautiful, passionate, and poised at the very beginning of her tumultuous rise to power. Arriving in France with four close friends as her ladies-in-waiting, Mary has been sent to secure Scotland’s strategic alliance by formalizing her arranged engagement to the French king’s dashing son, Prince Francis. But the match isn’t signed and sealed, it depends more on politics, religion and secret agendas than affairs of the heart. Prince Francis is intrigued by the fiery Scot, but like most young men, he resists the idea of settling down into marriage, especially when he has a history with a lady of the court and his own point of view on the wisdom of an alliance with Scotland. Still, an attraction between Mary and Francis is ignited.
Further complicating things is Bash, Francis’ roguish half-brother, who has a history of his own - despite his illegitimate birth, Bash is his father’s favorite. And now that Bash has caught Mary’s eye, a royal triangle may be forming. While at French Court, fierce foes and dark forces conspire to sabotage Mary’s marriage to Francis and even threaten her life, until a mysterious shrouded guide becomes her ally. With danger and sexual intrigue around every dark castle corner, Mary rallies her ladies-in-waiting and steels herself, ready to rule the new land and balance the demands of her country and her heart.
The series stars Adelaide Kane (“Teen Wolf”) as Mary, Toby Regbo (“One Day”) as Prince Francis, Torrance Coombs (“The Tudors”) as Bash, Megan Follows (“Anne of Green Gables”) as Queen Catherine, Alan Van Sprang (“The Tudors”) as King Henry, Celina Sinden (newcomer) as Greer, Caitlin Stasey (newcomer) as Kenna, Anna Popplewell (“The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader”) as Lola, and Jenessa Grant (“Cyberbully”) as Aylee. REIGN is from CBS Television Studios and Warner Bros. Television with executive producers Stephanie SenGupta (“Hawaii Five-0”), Laurie McCarthy (“The Ghost Whisperer”), Frank Siracusa (“Beauty And The Beast”) and Brad Silberling (“Moonlight Mile”). The pilot was directed by Brad Silberling.
A period drama seems a step outside of the CW's usual programming, but that doesn't mean it can't work for the network. Historical fantasies have worked out pretty well for other networks, so we'll have to wait and see how this one strikes the typically younger demo that The CW targets. What's evident from the clip is that this is the start of a romance, and that always sells well, no matter the dress or vernacular. Plus, it looks exciting…
