Fakeih hopes expats will take advantage of grace period

Fakeih hopes expats will take advantage of grace period

Labor Minister Adel Fakeih yesterday called on all illegal foreign workers to make use of the three-month grace period given by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah to correct their status.

“It’s a good opportunity for serious expats to correct their situation as there is no justification for the stay of foreigners who work for firms other than their sponsors or for their own accounts,” the minister said.

He said his ministry would provide all facilities for expatriates to correct their status, while urging everybody to cooperate to protect the interests of the nation as well as the labor market.

He said many expats could not renew their iqamas or residency permits because of their own reasons or that of sponsors, who may have slipped into the red or yellow categories of the Nitaqat system for failing to employ the required number of Saudis.

The minister said firms in green and platinum categories would benefit during the correction period as they would be able to recruit those workers of companies in the red and yellow that failed to correct their status.
“This will help them save the expenditure for foreign recruitment,” he added.

He said the correction campaign would help Saudis get more jobs as companies in red and yellow would try to employ more of them to correct their status. He expected platinum and green companies to recruit more Saudis to maintain their Nitaqat position.

“The move against violators will also enable Saudis to open small and medium enterprises and they will not face any competition from illegal cover-up businesses,” he said.

Fakeih said the expats already know what violations they have committed and there is no need of explaining it to them again. He said police would support labor officials in their campaign against illegal workers.

Saudi Arabia appreciates the efforts being made by foreign workers in the Kingdom’s development. “At the same time it asserts that they should follow the country’s law,” the minister added.

Police performance review: Speed up targeted operation in Karachi says Zardari

Police performance review: Speed up targeted operation in Karachi says Zardari

KARACHI: President Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday called upon the interim government in Sindh to speed up its ongoing targeted operation against criminals.
Presiding over his first meeting with the caretaker cabinet, President Zardari examined the performance of Sindh police and emphasised the need to improve living conditions for enhanced policing.
Sources said that the president was briefed on the operation being carried out by law enforcing agencies in different parts of Karachi. He was also informed about the recruitment of 8,000 additional police personnel in the province. On the occasion, President Zardari directed the government to take all possible measures to fight lawlessness and curb unrest across the province.
The meeting, which was attended Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan and caretaker Chief Minister Justice (retd) Zahid Kurban Alvi, also discussed the security plan for the upcoming elections.
The president asked the provincial caretaker setup to take appropriate measures to maintain law and order during the elections and voiced hope that the cabinet would contribute towards holding free, fair and transparent elections.
Sindh interim Information Minister, Noorul Huda Shah, while speaking to media outside Bilawal House said that the provincial government will improve the election security plan following the direction of the president.
“The president has called for a better police performance,” Shah told The Express Tribune. She added that the president had suggested a six-hour duty shift may contribute towards improved policing. “He has also directed the government to look towards better health and residence facilities for the police.”
Shah said that while a six-hour duty seemed impossible, the issues faced by the police department, including health, residence and better uniforms would be resolved on an urgent basis.

Kim Kardashian enjoys sharing glimpses of her personal life with her 17.6 million Twitter followers and Saturday was no exception.

Kim has taken a lot of heat for her growing figure in recent weeks (including being dubbed "fat" and compared to a killer whale), but brushed off the mean-spirited comments during an appearance on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" last week.
"I mean, what do you expect? I hope I gain weight. I'm a little heavy," she told Jay at the time, adding that she considers mocking a pregnant woman's weight to be "bully-ish." "There's just more to love right now.

"I have the rest of my life to be skinny and to lose weight and I'm not really worrying about it. If I have a craving I'll go for it," she continued.
