HOT OR NOT: RENE RUSSO

Big props last week for Gretchen Mol, who might not have a candle bright enough to hold against her LAGGIES co-star Keira Knightley but holds up fairly well regardless. This week we're celebrating All Hallow's Eve weekend with the release of the scariest looking Jake Gyllenhaal character so far, in NIGHTCRAWLER. It's nice that one of his co-stars is there to balance out his emaciated ugly. 



When I first really remember seeing Rene Russo, she was playing the mousy librarian that Tom Berenger's baseball player was hot for in MAJOR LEAGUE and I didn't understand the appeal. Sure, I was too young to see what that Russo has what is a more mature and yet ageless sort of sexuality that hasn't changed much in the past 30 or so years. 




Russo really is a presence when she's in a film, whether by being fun and a bit silly in the MAJOR LEAGUE sense or by being the wrapped up, strapped down futuristic hottie in FREEJACK (yeah, it's a dumb film but it's one of those dumb ones I could easily watch over and over). She typically plays a lot of burdened wife characters, which isn't easy to sell, but I suppose if you're going to be hitched to someone for the long term, she's the best way to go.
