Starbucks to ban smoking within 25 feet of cafes

NEW YORK (AP) — Starbucks customers will soon have to stamp out their cigarettes before approaching the cafes.
The Seattle-based chain says it will start banning smoking within 25 feet of its stores, beginning Saturday, where permitted by its leases.
Starbucks spokeswoman Jaime Lynn Riley says the intent is to expand the indoor no-smoking policy to the outdoor seating areas.
"If there were any concerns, we would hope to resolve it amicably." Riley said, referring to a customer who might be smoking within the restricted area.
The rule will apply to the 7,000 cafes owned and operated by Starbucks Corp., regardless of whether they have outdoor seating areas.
The policy shouldn't cause a big difference in many areas that already ban smoking within a certain distance of a business entrance.

5 things I learned from watching lesbians watch lesbian porn

Here's something that might come as a shock to you: Lesbian porn is actually meant for men.
To prove this point, Davey Wavey—a fitness guru and gay YouTube user best known for asking gay men what they thought of vaginas, lesbians for their insights on the penis, and senior citizens for their feelings on gay sex—sat down several lesbians and asked them to watch a pornographic video of two ladies getting it on.
The general consensus amongst the interviewees was that not only were these videos not an actual reflection of real life, but that they were obscene and off-putting. In other words, lesbian porn is just like every other type of porn.
In addition to dispelling myths held by clueless guys and being all kinds of hilarious, Davey Wavey's video is full of wonderful insights for your typical, heteronormative male. We've listed the best of them below.

  • A lesbian who has never had a sexual encounter with a man is referred to as a "gold star lesbian."
  • Working off of the previous bullet point, most lesbians don't actually enjoy having stuff jammed inside their nether regions. As a result, you can tell that the women who star in lesbian videos are actually straight because of how much they seem to enjoy to being penetrated.
  • Lesbians prefer for fingernails to be properly trimmed.
  • Women who enjoy having sex with other women do not enjoy fellatioing or licking high-heeled shoes. For starters, they're lesbians and are therefore not turned on by phallic-shaped items. Secondly, it's highly unsanitary.
  • Consistency is key.

Google reportedly in talks with South Africa and Kenya regulators to build wireless networks on TV airwaves

Google is reportedly working on a way to connect more people around the world to the Internet, specifically those in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the search engine company is looking to build wireless networks in emerging networks through TV airwaves, making it possible to connect where wired Internet isn’t available.

It’s believed that Google will be partnering with local companies to build out these networks. It has been talking with regulators in South Africa and Kenya to look at the current laws in the country to see if this network can be built “en masse.” Sources tell The Wall Street Journal that Google has also been working on new microprocessors and low-cost Android smartphones to help those that can’t afford devices that many in more resource-rich countries can.

This isn’t the first time Google has explored being a good global company. At the Google I/O developer conference, co-founder and CEO Larry Page spoke at its keynote and said “technology should do the hard work, so people can get on doing the things that make them happiest in life.”

He spoke about a technology utopia that he envisioned Google playing a part in, which is supported by its X division. The company has been investing in moonshot technology, such as the self-driving automobile and, most recently, Google Glass. The goal, according to Astro Teller, Google X’s director, is to find something that is a huge problem for humanity and look for ways to fix it.

While there are many countries in the world that enjoy high-speed Internet, there are still those that don’t even have access to it, mostly because of the lack of infrastructure, not due to government interference. Reports show that Google is working on making “special balloons or blimps, known as high-altitude platforms” to transmit signals to an area of hundreds of square miles.” The company is also looking at developing a satellite-based network, but acknowledges that a given solution won’t necessarily work in every market it’s targeting.

Google has spent its resources and technology to better connect people with one another, specifically in the areas of education. It has donated its Chromebooks to schools to help students learn, made its Google Apps software available to encourage knowledge sharing, and more. It has also created a Crisis Response team to help in the event of disasters around the world to help people find out what’s happening and get the latest news.

Additionally, it can’t go without being said that this is certainly similar to Google’s effort to bring faster Internet in the US, having launched its Fiber service last year in Kansas City, Missouri. Austin, Texas and Provo, Utah have lined up to be the next two supported cities.

Just as integral, bullish insider trading sentiment is a second way to break down the world of equities. Just as you'd expect, there are lots of stimuli for a corporate insider to sell shares of his or her company, but just one, very obvious reason why they would behave bullishly. Many academic studies have demonstrated the useful potential of this tactic if "monkeys" understand what to do (learn more here). Now, we're going to take a glance at the key action surrounding W.R. Did Atty. Gen Eric Holder Lie Under Oath To Congress?

Greta Van Susteren had Karl Rove on her show, Thursday night, to discuss the Holder/AP/Fox News scandal following the revelation that Eric Holder personally approved the search warrant for James Rosen’s private emails under the pretext that he was a “possible co-conspirator” in violations of the Espionage Act.

Rove brought to light what Holder had recently testified before Congress:
“First of all you’ve got a long way to go to try to prosecute the press for publication of material. This has not fared well in American history… In regard to potential prosecution of the press for the disclosure of material. This is not something I’ve ever been involved in, heard of, or would think would be wise policy.“
I don't know how that can be construed as anything but a direct lie. There was some question as to whether or not Holder had testified under oath. As you may remember, the Senate gave former Sec. of State Hillary Clinton that courtesy when she testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
That courtesy was not extended to Holder.

Friday Favorite: Type2Phone

Type2Phone ($4.99) is one of the most practical tools in my development toolbox. It emulates a Bluetooth keyboard from your Mac. With it, you type to your iOS device using your normal desktop keyboard.

While this may not sound like a big thing for many iOS users -- after all, the onboard keyboards and new dictation features streamline text entry -- it is a huge deal for devs and IT coordinators who have to keep typing similar things into apps and settings, over and over again.

For example, take Game Center development. You usually work with many different accounts, testing to see how access works for new users, for those with a good history of application use, or for those who have unlocked certain achievements. In a normal debug session, you may sign out and sign in with various credentials dozens of times. Type2Phone makes that a practical exercise in testing instead of torment.

Or, take today. I was trying to set up a SOCKS proxy system and had to keep typing addresses for various configurations. Once again Type2Phone came to the rescue. It's so much more practical to type or paste longwinded URLs like http://10.0.0.1:8888/Public/socks.pac from my home desktop than to laboriously tip-tip-tap it on the phone or iPad.

Type2Phone was designed smart, with re-use in mind. I long ago synced it to my primary dev units. Now, I just select each unit from the in-app pop-up list, and I'm ready to type right away.

To be fair, there are a few unhappy reviews over at the Mac App Store, but they describe situations (primarily beachballs) that I have not encountered, and I'm a pretty heavy user of the product.

For me, Type2Phone is an essential software component. My development life would be way harder without it. And that's why I consider it my Friday favorite for this week.

Why Yahoo! Buying Tumblr Is Not Great For NYC's Tech Scene

By Greg Gretsch, Managing Director, Sigma West, an early-stage technology VC firm in Silicon Valley.

For years we’ve been hearing about how the ascendant tech startup scene in NYC is going to rival Silicon Valley’s tech-hegemony. It’s a story the mainstream media has run with hard because, after all, NYC is the apex for the mainstream media and, who doesn’t like rooting for the home team? For those NYC cheerleaders (I’m talking to you Bloomberg and WSJ), Yahoo ‘s purchase of Tumblr was solid confirmatory evidence of the momentum-shift they’ve been trumpeting. Yet, while the acquisition was clearly a good thing for Tumblr’s founder and early backers, it was at best OK and at worst a bad thing for NYC’s quest to challenge Silicon Valley’s tech dominance.

The confluence of elements at the core of Silicon Valley’s vibrant tech scene have been long discussed – fantastic universities, access to capital, and access to a strong startup support system. NYC long had great universities and human capital (although not as much tech DNA) but, somewhat surprisingly for the financial center of the world, NYC just didn’t have a strong startup funding culture. To be clear, there is plenty of wealth to be invested in NYC; somewhat ironically there are five NY metro area hedge-fund titans who each made individually more in 2012 than the entire purchase price of Tumblr. Lots of money, just not lots of it going to tech startups. Another way to put it is that there are lots of billionaires, just no tech-billionaires. In the last 10 years, at least the money side of the equation has been looking better for NYC. According to the PWC/NVCA MoneyTree, NYC’s share of venture investment dollars grew from 5.8% of the US total in Q1 2003 to 9.8% in Q1 2013. NYC is taking venture investment share from other markets, but it is not taking it from Silicon Valley. Over that same period, Silicon Valley’s share of US venture investment dollars went from 32.5% to 37.9%.

So what is NYC missing and in what alternate universe could the Tumblr acquisition be bad for the NYC tech ecosystem? What Silicon Valley has in abundance that no other tech-center rivals is what I will refer to as the anchor-tenant companies. Anchor-tenant companies are those that become large independent and growing tech leaders. They continue to generate wealth; their alums continue to spawn new companies; and they continue to buy interesting startups fueling the cycle. There are tech giants in places other than Silicon Valley (Microsoft , Amazon, IBM ), but no area rivals the valley for the sheer number of these tech titans. Silicon Valley has them in every corner of tech and continues to create them. Just since the tech bubble burst, we’ve added LinkedIn and Facebook (started post bubble) and Google and Salesforce (IPO post bubble) to name just a few.

This brings me back to Tumblr. A great company and a great outcome. But now that the music has stopped and Tumblr has taken a chair, the company has stopped playing for the big leagues. Tumblr may ultimately become as meaningful to Yahoo! as YouTube has become to Google, as Yahoo! CFO Ken Goldman implies, although I’m skeptical. But even if it reaches that lofty status it will be bittersweet for the NYC tech community. Because instead of having a large independent tech giant around which an ecosystem can flourish, NYC will have a large satellite division of a Silicon Valley company.

Kris Jenner Wears Kim Kardashian’s Dress in a Bizarre Show of Mother-Daughter Love (PHOTO)

In what has to be yet another desperate attempt to look much younger than she actually is, Kris Jenner wore Kim Kardashian's dress -- aGivenchy frock that Kim first turned up in at the beginning of her pregnancy.
And based on the pose Kris is striking in this photo, it's clear she's pretty damn proud of herself for pulling off wearing something that belongs to her 32-year-old daughter. Oh come on -- she's standing there with her hands thrown up in the air. Don't you feel like she's screaming, "Check me out, bitches! Am I a hot ticket or what?"
Of course, she tried to disguise her little brag-fest with the following caption to the photo, which she posted on Instagram: "I think I need to get out a little bit more, starting to dress to match my house #obsessed!!!"
(Yeah. Obsessed with trying to look 25 years younger.)
Or obsessed with looking like Kim. Remember that dark wig she wore in Greece?
Ok, so the dress itself really isn't all that bad -- when Kim Kardashian is the one wearing it. It's fitted, which is definitely a Kim thing, and it has a funky print going on, which she also seems to favor (wonder if Kanye picked this one out?).
Here's Kim in the dress. Pretty cute, right?
Kim Kardashian
But at 57, should Kris really be raiding her daughter's closet? Isn't that just a teensy bit, well -- lame?
At 35, I'm well aware that there are certain things I just can't wear anymore because of my age, and because I'm a mom. Even though I see plenty of gorgeous 22-year-olds who look amazing in a pair of booty shorts and tank tops, I'm not about to run out and buy similar attire in the hopes of appearing any less 30-something-ish than I am.
And I don't have a daughter, but if I did, I can guarantee I wouldn't think about trying to squeeze into her duds when I'm a grandmother, for crying out loud. And even if I do happen to be a GILF (is that a word?) when I'm a granny -- I still wouldn't wear my hypothetical daughter's clothes. Wanna know the main reason why? I wouldn't want to embarrass her.
Whether she realizes it or not, that's exactly what Kris did when she posted this photo. (Poor Kim.)
Do you think Kris looked good in Kim's dress?

Avril Lavigne Says She Wants To Stay Young Forever

Since her debut at the age of 17, Avril Lavigne has put out four studio albums and even dabbled in some acting. The singer has been married once and later went through a fairly painful and public divorce. Now she's in a solid, stable relationship with Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger, and has had plenty of life experience, yet the 28-year-old believes she would rather remain forever youthful.

In fact’s she’s even put out a brand new single discussing that very topic as a lead-in to her fifth studio album. The single is called “Here’s to Never Growing Up,” and the singer recently spoke to MTV to explain what the song she and fiancée Kroeger co-wrote is really about.

"It's pop rock, up-tempo. It's a fun song; it's about wanting to be young forever. Doesn't matter what age you are; it's all about your spirit, state of mind. And I know I certainly don't want to grow up, so there are more songs on the record like this."

Pop rock and up-tempo music is pretty signature for Lavigne, who has often written songs about youthful romances and problems in relationships. It’s interesting that instead of writing a song like One Direction’s “Live While We’re Young,” which tackles a fun night out, Lavigne is singing more about hitting an age where she doesn’t want to change her mentality, even though she is getting older. That’s a pretty adult take on a youthful mentality, and Pop Blend certainly hopes it works out for the singer.

We'll let you know when Lavigne announces exactly when her fifth studio album will drop.

Amanda Seyfried & Colin Farrell: 'Epic' New York Premiere!

Amanda Seyfried keeps it red hot while attending the premiere of her new film Epic held at The Ziegfeld Theatre on Saturday (May 18) in New York City.

The 27-year-old actress was joined by her co-stars Colin Farrell, Jason Sudeikis, Aziz Ansari, and Chris O’Dowd.

It was recently announced that Amanda will star in the upcoming flick Z For Zachariah, which centers on “a teenaged girl (Seyfried) who is seemingly the sole survivor until a scientist (Chiwetel Ejiofor) finds her farm, and the two fall in love. Another survivor, a young man (Chris Pine), surfaces, complicating matters.”

Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez Seating Plan Heats Up Billboard Awards Buzz

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez’s seating arrangements at this Sunday’s Billboard Music Awards can now be added to the numerous red flags pointing to their likely coupledom.
Seconds after Omg! Insider executive producer Brad Bessey tweeted a seating plan clearly showing Bieber and Gomez will sit next to each other at the event, the news rippled through the web like oil on butter.

Along with the seating snap, Bessey trilled:
“U wanted proof @justinbieber & @selenagomez @billboard seats r 2gether? Here u go! @omgInsider #omginsider.”
All of this comes after the Spring Breakers actress affirmed her singleton status at a radio show last Friday, but days later was seen driving away from Bieber’s L.A. home within 24 hours of his post-touring return to the States.
In addition, earlier this week, a source told E! News that the pair paid a visit to celeb hot spot Supperclub on Tuesday, May 14. Reportedly, Bieber and Gomez held hands and danced inside the club for the brief 45 minutes they were there.
The question of whether they will go public — if indeed, they are a couple — at the awards has added major frisson to an already highly anticipated show, and joins the five other crucial questions Idolator’s marvelous Carl Williot lists here.
Justin Bieber And Selena Gomez Are They Or Aren't They?

It’s going to be quite the throwdown. As well as a double dose of Bieber — who is set to perform “#thatPOWER” with will.i.am and a solo “Take you” — Gomez will get her Bollywood-lite routine on for “Come and Get It.”
Among others, Taylor Swift, Chris Brown, Miguel, Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran, Lil Wayne with Nicki Minaj, Christina Aguilera with Pitbull and “special guest,” plus Jennifer Lopez with Pitbull (again) and David Guetta with Ne-Yo and Akon are also performing on the night.
Tracy Morgan hosting, a very probable ripe acceptance speech from Madonna when she grips her Top Touring Artist Award, copious shout-outs to God from winners and plenty of absolutely gratuitous camera shots of Bieber and Gomez, are just some of the things we can reasonably anticipate on the show’s menu.
Did we mention Prince will be in the building? Yes, the Purple One himself will be taking to the stage and will also receive Billboard’s Icon Award during the show.
The 2013 Billboard Music Awards airs live on ABC from Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena on Sunday, May 19 at 8 pm ET.

Kristen Wiig Gives An Admirable Explanation For Not Making Bridesmaids 2

Last week during Saturday Night Live we were reminded of how much we adore Kristen Wiig (as if we could ever forget) and wished she would come back to the show and never leave. In a new interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Kristen reiterates how “sad” it’s been for her to be off the show, but she also explains her reasoning behind not wanting to make a Bridesmaids sequel. It’s simply wonderful.

When asked about her decision not to participate in a Bridesmaids sequel, despite the pretty much immediate public demand for it, Kristen has some great things to say:

“It wasn’t a hard decision,” she says. “We knew during the first one, this was it. We would have made a lot of money if there was a second one, but that’s not my goal in my creative life.”

I just think that is so swell. I like that she doesn’t bat her eyelashes and say, “Oh, would it have been really successful and made a lot of money? I don’t know, what’s money?” while rolling around in a pile of hundred-dollar bills. There’s no fake modesty involved. She acknowledges that yes, it probably would be really lucrative, because duh. It had a great box office performance and everyone was (and is) obsessed with it. It’s not that Kristen can’t see money, it’s just that it’s not her objective in making career choices, and she wants to move on to different projects.

And to be honest, do we really need a Bridesmaids 2? It was an original screenplay with a clear end. We can get Kristen’s brand of humor and revisit the movie’s cast in future projects with different, fresher storylines. There are plenty of movies that I obsess over, but unless there’s some other source material to adapt or a cliffhanger to address, I’m usually satisfied rewatching the original and following the future careers of those involved.

Kristen has a lot of projects lined up, and I’ll enjoy watching them even more knowing she’s doing them for the right reasons.

Michael Jackson Housekeeper: Witness to Wade Robson Molestation?

A housekeeper who once described seeing Wade Robson in the shower with Michael Jackson may be the key to the former's claims of molestation.
Robson, 30, recently accused Jackson of sexual abuse in a claim against his estate, then defended himself on Today, calling Michael a pedophile.
Wade Robson, Michael Jackson
Blanca Francia's testimony during Jackson's 2005 child molestation trial included a graphic account of MJ showering naked with a young Wade Robson.
Francia described seeing Michael's underwear on the floor outside the Neverland Ranch shower, as well as Wade's child-sized neon green underwear.
She said she couldn't see exactly what the King of Pop was doing in there because the shower door was fogged up, but said she heard him laughing.
Despite Francia's story, Michael was acquitted - in no small part because Wade himself also testified and insisted Jackson never abused him.
That's the opposite, of course, of what he is claiming now.
Robson is planning to argue that the late icon's companies, MJJ Productions and MJJ Ventures, had a duty to protect him when he was a young boy.
Because they were involved in recruiting him from Australia to work with Michael - who he says abused him from ages 7-14 - they are liable today.
According to TMZ, Wade wants to use Blanca's 2005 testimony to show Michael abused him, and hope that she will cooperate in his new case as well.
Robson has been hammered by MJ's former attorney Tom Mesereau, as well as Michael's nephew Taj Jackson, his ex-wife Debbie Rowe, and others.
Michael's camp says Wade is obviously changing his story now because he's motivated by money, and point to his moving 2005 account - under oath.
Wade says he understands this, but is adamant that he's not lying now.
“I never forgot one moment of what Michael did,” he said. “But I was psychologically unable and unwilling to understand that it was sexual abuse.”
“I lived in silence and denial for 22 years," Robson went on, noting that he suffered nervous breakdowns that nearly ended his career two years ago.
"In order to heal, I have to speak the truth and speak the whole truth."
